WHAT’S A VOICE REEL?
Voice Reels are essentially your CV, to showcase what you can do. Unless a sample audition has been requested, your reels will be sent to clients and casting directors for them to chose from, which means they need to be of high quality to sell you and your voice.
It is important that your voice reel reflects what type of work you are looking for. There is no point in paying for a commercial reel when you really want to use your character voices for an animation.
If, for example, you want to record an audiobook, you should have a dedicated audiobook reading sample. For audiobooks, Casting directors will assess your reel and your ability to tell a story, how you would engage a listener, how you naturally deal with things like characterisation, pacing, spoken dynamics, how you transition between the performance of narration and different characters. Audiobook samples should be between 3-5 minutes of a modern contemporary fiction and nothing overly well known. Choosing what you read for your sample is very important, you need to showcase your range as much as possible, choose a section with narration and character dialogue, multiple characters is preferred, with at least one character of the opposite sex to show how you would tackle this.
If you have a range of character voices, accents, languages - make sure you show them! As an agent it is difficult to put someone forward for a job if they don’t have the reel to back it up.
We don’t produce voice reels ourselves but are happy to recommend the below companies who are also able to give you advice and training. However, it is important to do your own research as your voice reel is individual to you, so you need to find out what is best for you and your goals.
If you do go with any of these, make sure to mention I sent you!
